City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert

City of Girls was an unexpected gem! If you don’t recognize the author’s name, she wrote a little book called Eat, Pray, Love. For this Book Junkie, there is no comparison, City of Girl’s wins hands down.

The story is told in retrospect, via a letter from one woman to another. Their relationship is unknown until the end of the book. The story is set in New York City in the 1940’s, and details the lives of women who dare to live outside of the norm. They are performers with deep bonds, who enjoy life, drinks, sex, and sometimes go too far. The story follows their adventures, and misadventures through the production of a play “City of Girls”. Elizabeth Gilbert manages to interweave some poignant reminders that life is fleeting and to be enjoyed.

This BookJunkie had a book hangover after this wild read. It definitely makes the list of my favorite books.
